Why Did I Start a Theater Blog?
After more than thirty years navigating the corporate world, I decided to change direction and rekindle a desire for creative expression. I’ve always loved writing, from being Editor-in-Chief of my high school newspaper to creating speeches for business presentations.
I am also an avid theatergoer based in New York City. Theater has always been a passion for me.
However, as a consumer, I grew increasingly frustrated with critic’s reviews. Too many simply consisted of plot summaries giving away far too much information. I started this blog in May 2016 as a hobby.
With a little research, I designed this website and began chronicling my theater visits. My goal is to provide an appropriate level of detail for a reader to understand what a show is about and whether or not I recommend it.
Free Email Subscriptions Available
The more theater I attend, the more I find I cannot comprehend some critic’s opinions. Thankfully, the internet affords all of us the option of sharing our viewpoints.
Readers can decide if they generally find my thoughts to be helpful in making a ticket purchase decision or in understanding what’s new in the theater scene. I offer a free email subscription so those with a high level of enthusiasm can see all new posts as they are published.
Another goal of my blog is to inspire. I cover shows from the big Broadway musicals to intimate plays in tiny Off-Off Broadway houses.
In a little over five years I have published reviews of more than 600 productions. There are so many theater companies competing for your attention in New York’s rich theatrical community.
I also blog about shows I attend when traveling outside of New York. I hope to encourage adventure: take a gamble and see something off the beaten path!
The Evolution From Blogger to Critic
My site has grown to the point where I am now regularly receiving many requests to review shows as a member of the press. In the spring of 2019, I became an associate critic on Broadway World. This highly trafficked site enables even more people to seek out reviews, especially for Off and Off-Off Broadway works.
I am always looking for new theatrical events to attend and blog about. My email address is theaterreviewsfrommyseat@comcast.net.
Launching a Monthly Podcast
After blogging for about eight months, I started a podcast for theaterreviewsfrommyseat which is available on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, Google and Buzzsprout. The monthly episodes cover theater reviews from my blog in a different format for people who prefer that method of communication. I also try to add tips for upcoming events that I am especially excited about.
On a personal note, the discipline of publishing content this frequently has had a major side benefit. My blog is now a fulsome diary of my experiences.
When you see as much theater as I do, sometimes remembering a specific work can be challenging. Not any longer! I hope you enjoy reading theaterreviewsfrommyseat and best wishes for happy theater-going.
